Hey guys - its been a bit of a long week for me so far (and its only wednesday ha). It looks like Im going to be finishing up my duel vs H20Dynamo just in time! So stay tuned for that.

In the mean time, I thought I'd share some words of wisdom I got from @Stickly on discord:

"If you can SEE that your drawing doesn't look like the original, why don't you fix it?
If something IS off, then find out what that is, and fix it and keep knowledge on it, because those times that you STOP and think about your drawings build across your learning curve and make you more knowledgeable one mistake at a time

Start taking your fingers and measuring your proportions between your reference and the drawing you have over your computer screen

Start taking mental notes on why some things occur and on actual real world implications so that you can transfer that into your latter works. It's something you may be doing already, but from what I see in your sketches you keep doing the same things. You make the upper body/chest areas too large and the waists too thin, you keep everything generally thin in terms of limbs, your face hold no real form of what a face actually is, they usually appear to be more of blobs with subtletees and facial features that make them to be faces

If you were to have a triangle as a reference to draw, you would draw a triangle. It won't be the same triangle, mind you, but it will be believable enough to be seen as a triangle. You wouldn't draw a square if you saw the reference of the triangle, because the drawing of the triangle would lose it's once held value as an illustration of a triangle as a square instead.

It's a dead simple concept but it's what each artist derives from referencing photographs, other artists, etc, implementing them into your drawing. You are illustrating a reference, therefore illustrating to a fair bit of closeness to be able to tell that that reference has been followed closely, or to an extent where it's been pushed to a new sort of angle that you approach it from. But taking the fundamentally sound aspects and going off on tangents based on habits is not the way to improve. Try to think on a clean slate, drawing from whatever photographic reference you may have, and then if you start to see differences, realize what they are, identify the cause, and start to get in the habit of not creating the same thing, or else the cycle repeats and your referencing skills never change. I doubt that if you looked at your drawing when it was completed, then at the reference, and back again, that you didn't find any differences that affected the quality

This isn't a life lesson or a rule, but it's something that I personally see as a better mind set, and I just really want you to be able to improve more, because you've come far"

i read allll of that beautiful motivational words, and it's true. Except sometimes people like me dont reference off of stuff because I know what i want it to look like in my mind, but nvm. still a good piece of literacy and advice lol

Honestly if you were to give context to what I was referring to, then I don't think I have a problem with you sharing it. But this bit of critique was directed toward Steel. In it you can see I was talking about specific aspects of his drawings and this shouldn't be seen as an overall generalization of critiquing somebodies artwork, because they'd most likely see it confused. The last 3 paragraphs are more applicable as critiques for other artists. If you'd like to share this with others I suggest you take it and simplify it or change points to better suit that artist's needs @waterzen . Thank you for sharing my bit of advice, @Steel . As I said previously, @Hey3210 , this was a critic on Steel's drawings and learning curve, not a word of wisdom to everyone drawing from a reference.

Hey guys - Im in the process of making a combo tutorial. I don't really see one that exists in the way that I think it should be, so I decided to do it myself.

Here is part 1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QozEwZ8Mb8w I really want you guys to focus on fundamentals of animation first before we get into anything. If you are a beginning, these exercises will be solid for you. If you are more advanced, these exercises should be a good exercise to be more creative with the topics. Feel free to PM me your exercises that you've done.

Let me know if you have suggestions for my series or on how to make my videos not be as terrible rofl.
